Construction Update, 12/6/10

Rain Hampers Plans

The mid-week rain and cold temperatures slowed progress last week as crews had to wait for the ground to dry out before continuing the grading process and pouring concrete driveways. Cold weather can also be a factor in the concrete pour process, as it impacts the rate at which the concrete cures.

Taking Care of the Details

In addition to the grading work that has taken place this week to prepare the site for concrete, electrical crews continue to underground utilities. All utility work should be completed before the end of the year. Expect to see utility poles removed and utility lines absent from the skyline in the former East Back Lot.  This work coincides with City Council’s initiative to underground utilities along the Rutledge Street corridor.

In other news, tenants behind Rutledge Street Gallery will be pleased to know that the concrete pad at the rear entrance will be completed today. Customers should be able to walk across the area; however, no vehicles should travel over the newly concreted area, as this could compromise its integrity and cause cracking.

The contractor has also installed a temporary sidewalk to allow handicap access to the rear of the Old Armory Steakhouse. This sidewalk was also added to allow for roll cart removal and deliveries, as the existing pavement was fully removed at the beginning of last week.

The construction staging has changed slightly since the last update due to changing conditions on site. As the site changes, we must adjust our plans with it. Look for crews to pour the concrete drive to the east of the Town Green behind Camden Insurance Agency later this week. Additionally, work will begin on creating footers for the new masonry wall made of tumbled brick. The final work will begin on replacing the last of some aged sewer lines to the north of the site.
