To this point, the contractor’s work has been focused around installing stormwater lines near the Old Armory Steakhouse. This process was anticipated to move rather quickly; however, the discovery of some conflicting utility lines has slowed progress.
SCE&G crews were out Monday and Tuesday relocating an eight-inch gas line along Rutledge Street. Once completed, the contractor should be able to move at full speed once again.
Another issue of contention was the uncovering of the existing stormwater line for the East Back Lot, which runs underneath Dennis Cannon's law office and crosses Rutledge Street to the front of Nettles Dry Cleaning. It is estimated that the infrastructure in that area is over 100 years old. Engineers, planners, contractors, and City staff are working diligently to devise an efficient way to replace the antiquated stormwater infrastructure.
What to Expect in Week 3
Phase One of the project is entering its third week, and rain has limited some of the activity that can take place on-site. Phase One is anticipated to last four weeks, but weather and any other existing utility problems may impact that schedule.
This week look for the contractor to continue to install stormwater pipes across the remainder of the site. Additionally, the City will begin to devise solutions for the aforementioned 100-year-old stormwater system issues that impact the Cannon Law Offices and Rutledge Street. Electricians will also continue their work, which will result in partial shutdowns of the rear drive access to Wachovia & NBSC.
The City has continued to receive input from merchants on better ways to ease disruptions during the construction process. The Camden Police Department will continue its efforts on parking enforcement issues to ensure adequate customer parking. Again, if you are an employee in the project area, then you are encouraged to use the temporary parking lot located behind New Dimensions on Market Street.
With regard to deliveries, be reminded that if your usual driveway entrance is shut down due to construction scheduling, delivery trucks will have to double park on the street. Scheduling your deliveries during off-peak hours is encouraged. If you have increased trash disposal needs please contact the Downtown Development office to request more roll carts or schedule a trash pickup.
Lastly, the issue has been raised that some vehicles have been blocking access to the rear alley entrance off of Rutledge Street. This is private property; therefore, the City cannot regulate parking in this area, but it is suggested that you work together to keep the alley way open for your neighbors. If you have any other issues please contact Downtown Manager Wade Luther at (803) 432-2421 or wluther@camdensc.org
